C’YA News:
Planning is almost complete for a Health, Wellness and Resource Fair in Los Alamos. The event is scheduled to take place May 3 at 2525 Canyon Road. The United Church of Los Alamos has furnished a large space to allow Champions of Youth Ambitions (C’YA) to host the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event.
“The idea came as a result about sharing the news about our free suicide prevention trainings,” Bernadette Lauritzen C’YA Executive Director said. “We pitched the idea about getting out a lot of information for health and wellness resources to 100 Men Who Care, and they loved the idea.”
The health fair was always the place to go for small non-profits to reach a large audience. Lauritzen realized that thousands of people have moved into the community over the last few years, and many may not know the full potential of the community and what surrounds her. While the goal was never on the scale of the pre-Covid health fair magnitude, it was worth a try.
Lauritzen is thrilled that not only the Los Alamos Medical Center is on board, but Christus St. Vincent’s Primary Care and Sports Medicine Clinics, Healing America’s Heroes, the state Aging and Disability Resource Center, our local 4-H & Youth Development Program, the Youth Activity Center, County Social Services and more.
“It was important for us to have representation to address all ages,” Lauritzen said. “So, while we will have a hands-on activity for kids, we’ll also have some information on nutrition, free food support programs in the community, and cutting-edge technology on Tinnitus.” Handouts that you can take and go, with contact information for organizations in and outside the community are imperative according to Lauritzen.
Did you know the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line has a program that addresses drug or alcohol addiction? NMCAL can help you learn to assess, learn and address your issues with support available 24 hours a day. There will be resources available at the HWR fair or you can learn anytime on their website at www.nmcrisisline.com. Look for the New Mexico 5-Actions Program tab and then click How It Works?
Additional handouts will be available for: community activities, seniors, women’s issues, voting and mental health services. There’s still time to get involved, just email cya.org@att.net for more information.
The plan also includes at least one opportunity to pick mom up a Mother’s Day in the community and help a small local business at the same time.
C’YA also has plans to distribute information for May 7 which nationally is called, The Great American Grump Out. It will take place at Ashley Pond. If you are grumpy and need something to help you smile, they will be there too with handouts and sweet treats.
