Letter To The Editor: They Who Can Give Up Essential Liberty To Obtain A Little Temporary Safety Deserve Neither Liberty Nor Safety

By DOUG REILLY

Benjamin Franklin was, of course, one of the Founding Fathers of the USA. He was a Quaker, and he gave us a lexicon of great quotes, such as the title of this email. The first way I remember seeing this was slightly different:

“Those who would give up some liberty to obtain a bit more safety, will soon have neither…”

My favorite quote of his is:

“There never was a good war, or a bad peace…”

Today we hear constantly about the FBI’s argument with APPLE regarding opening a late model iPhone in the name of national security, and the fear of accepting refugees fleeing the horrible conditions in Syria and Iraq. I would love to see more media stories that include Ben’s quotes.
