This message is in response to the Letter to the Editor by Jacob Hollis (letter). I think this may be the first time I’ve ever responded to a Letter to the Editor.
You’ve managed to express your opinion with regards to Syrian Refugees and what to do about this, but it’s very clear you’re not thinking the ENTIRE issue through very well.
Here are a few things to consider:
- What about people from other countries like Cuba? Do we stop them, too?
- What about those with a tourist visa? Do we stop them? Are you going to track every one of them?
- This being a town largely influenced by foreign nationals doing experiments, do we stop all the scientists coming in, too? These are the REALLY dangerous ones because they have the knowledge to make stuff that’s exceptionally deadly.
A few things to think about in current politics that I see as related:
- Why is it that we have a wet foot/dry foot policy for Cuba (A Cuban who manages to get to a beach without being caught is safe) but if a person from Mexico comes across and lives here for DECADES, they must be deported? This is a country of immigrants — including your family more than likely (I’m guessing based on your name that your family is of European origin).
- Why wasn’t letting Syrians in an issue until the incident in France, which was done by people who weren’t Syrians?
- What about US Citizens who do things as bad or worse? Remember Timothy McVeigh? What about Robert Lewis Dear who just recently walked into a Planned Parenthood and started shooting? How about the guy who walked into a church in Charleston and killed nine people?
- What about hate groups or gangs like the KKK or the numerous gangs in LA (Crips, Bloods, etc.)?
If you don’t see a reason to help those who are suffering, I can only hope that you and I never have to go through anything similar.
I was raised in a poor family and fortunately, people were willing to help when it was needed.
