Letter To The Editor: Real Victims Of Middle-East Turmoil

By DOUG REILLY

We hear every day of the continuing suffering of the people of the Middle-East. The people are the real victims, especially those of Iraq and Syria.

The USA, Russia, and Saudi Arabia fight and kill for a variety of reasons, and more innocent civilians die or leave in hundreds of thousands and die on the seas.

The USA supports certain rebel groups and demands President Assad step down or be removed before we will stop fighting. The Saudis claim to fight the Islamic State that they support fully, because the IS is a Sunni group, albeit less conservative than the Wahhabi extremist version of Sunni Islam. The world powers continue to fight and the innocents continue to die.

I’m reminded of a statement from Pericles’ Funeral Oration in Thucydides’ ‘History of the Peloponnesian War.’ “The strong conquer as they will, and the weak suffer as they must.”

I would site several quotes about war from well-know people:

“It is well that war is so terrible; otherwise we should grow too fond of it.”  Robert E. Lee

“Older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die.”  Herbert Hoover

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”  Albert Einstein

“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”  Sun Tzu

“There never was a good war or a bad peace.”  Benjamin Franklin
