The Art of Writing
Saturday 3/24 at 11am
Free
Local poet and UNM-LA creative writing instructor, Jane Lin, will lead a free introductory session on ekphrasis: writing inspired by art. The Art Center celebrates this tradition with a workshop on ekphrastic writing during the show Beauty in the Beast. We will look at examples of different strategies for ekphrastic writing and use the Beauty in the Beast show as inspiration for our own writing.
For centuries poets and painters have turned to one another for inspiration. Both make the familiar unfamiliar, encouraging us to look again, to consider the world more deeply. Keats found inspiration in a Grecian urn, Auden in a painting by Brueghel, Hirsch in Hopper’s houses. We will look at examples of ekphrastic poetry which employ a variety of strategies from description to interpretation to metaphor, then explore the gallery to inspire our own writing. Please bring paper, pen, and a clipboard or something to lean on!
Advance registration Requested! For more information, email Jane Lin at janelin505@gmail.com. To register call the Art Center at 662-1635.
