LAPS Announces The Healthy Schools Initiative Community Book Read

LAPS News:

The LAPS Healthy Schools Initiative invites parents, teachers, and community members to join a Community Book Read sponsored by 100+ Women Who Care and the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation.

LAPS staff gather on a regular basis in professional learning circles to read and discuss the latest developments in educational research and practice. These book groups have been supported by the LAPS Foundation and other generous funders. They provide a venue for exchanging ideas and building mutual support.

The Healthy Schools Initiative would like to extend this opportunity to the community.

Our first selection is the book How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims. Having spent 10 years as Stanford University’s Dean of Freshmen, Lythcott-Haims served as an advocate for young adults and is the parent of two children.

In her work and her personal life, the author saw first-hand how our best intentions can prevent children from developing the skills they need to thrive. The book includes a discussion of the pitfalls of overhelping our children as well as practical suggestions for raising resilient adults.

From the book cover: “Relevant to parents of toddlers as well as of twentysomethings–and of special value to parents of teens–this book is a rallying cry for those who wish to ensure that the next generation can take charge of their own lives with competence and confidence.”

A free copy of the book will be provided to the first fifty participants who sign up. Participants are expected to read along with the group, attend three community discussion gatherings, and pass the book on to another community member when they have finished it.

The Community Book Read will kick off at UNM-LA’s Parenting University on March 18. Book discussions will take place at the Los Alamos High School library 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday evenings (April 13, 27 and May 11) and will be facilitated by LAPS staff and community members. Light food and refreshments will be provided.

The Healthy Schools Initiative is dedicated to supporting staff and student well-being through school-based programs, professional support, and community outreach and engagement.

Contact LAPS’ Healthy Schools Initiative Director Kristine Coblentz at k.coblentz@laschools.net or 505.663.2263 to sign up.
