Luján, Crapo Lead Colleagues In Letter Urging Radiation Exposure Compensation Act Extension And Expansion

U.S. SENATE News:

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) led their Senate colleagues in a bipartisan letter urging Congressional Leadership to extend the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) program in any upcoming spending package.

The letter urges extension before the program sunsets later this year. The RECA program, originally passed in 1990, compensates individuals exposed to radiation from aboveground nuclear weapons tests, as well as those who mined, milled, and transported uranium.

NNSA Field Office Proposes Construction, Upgrades To LANL Live Fire Range, Publishes Floodplain Assessment

LANL News:

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is proposing new construction and upgrade activities in lower Sandia Canyon at Technical Area (TA) 72 at the Outdoor Live Fire Range facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

The proposed upgrades are to improve range safety to help fulfill the mission requirements of maintaining a trained and qualified armed Protective Force.

The project activities within the 100-year floodplain include:

  • Installation of eight permanent flagpoles;
  • Installation of weatherproof electronic range status board;

DOE/NNSA: Statement Of Findings Issued For West Road Post & Cable Fencing Project

DOE/NNSA News:

The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Floodplain Statement of Findings for proposed installation of post and cable or in-kind barriers along West Road at selected locations near the Los Alamos County ice-skating rink in Los Alamos Canyon.

The proposed project is intended to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety on West Road by reducing traffic hazards associated with unsafe roadside parking and reduce wildland fire hazards associated with vehicles driving and parking on vegetation. West Read More

LANL: Delays On West Road Amid Tree & Shrub Removal

  • West Road will remain open, limited access to trails 

Drivers should expect minor delays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, excluding Fridays through Feb. 28 on West Road.

Trees and shrubs are being removed to improve driver safety and reduce fire danger concerns due to vegetation growth along West Road. Drivers are asked not to park on West Road for the safety of workers.
