LANL News:

  • West Road will remain open, limited access to trails

Drivers should expect minor delays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, excluding Fridays through Feb. 28 on West Road.

Trees and shrubs are being removed to improve driver safety and reduce fire danger concerns due to vegetation growth along West Road. Drivers are asked not to park on West Road for the safety of workers.

Please park at the ice rink.

For the safety of trail users and workers, the Reservoir and Devaney-Longmire trails are closed 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The trails will reopen in the evenings and on weekends.

Better visibility on West Road hairpin turn

After the work is completed, driver visibility will increase on West Road, particularly on the hairpin turn.

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Wildland Fire, Forest Health and Biological Resources groups have marked oak shrub, Siberian elm and other woody invasive species along the road corridors for removal due to wildfire and public safety concerns.

Don’t park on West Road and more tips

Drivers on West Road should remain vigilant of heavy machinery used for chipping and transporting trees and shrubs. Obey posted speed limits and traffic control signage.

Remember to use the ice rink parking lot instead of parking along West Road. When accessing the trails on the weekends, park in the ice rink overflow lot.

As work is completed, trails and surrounding areas will reopen. For public and worker safety, follow the posted and announced closures.

The public’s patience and flexibility are appreciated particularly in light of the delayed start date. Contact trails@lanl.gov with any questions.
