Gov. Susana Martinez highlighted $32 million in water and infrastructure upgrades around Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) during press conference this morning at the White Rock Y on N.M. 4.
These funds provide for Supplemental Environmental Projects (SEPs) based on settlement agreements between New Mexico and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) related to the February 2014 incidents at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad and the associated activities at LANL.
The funds and projects in the Los Alamos area include $10 million to build storm water control structures at LANL to increase monitoring and sampling in the area, another $10 million to replace aging water infrastructure such as lines, meters, and others, and $12 million to improve routes used to ship transuranic waste to WIPP – such as East Jemez Road and N.M. 4 around Los Alamos.
The total estimated value of the projects provided for by the settlement agreements is estimated at $74 million, including projects in, around, and between Los Alamos and LANL sites, Carlsbad and the WIPP site, and surrounding communities.
