Governor Signs Legislation To Reduce Mandated State Testing Time

Governor’s Office News:

SANTA FE — Gov. Susana Martinez has signed legislation to further reduce mandated state testing time in New Mexico schools.

Specifically, the legislation, House Bill 97 sponsored by Rep. G. Andres Romero, D-Albuquerque, eliminates the mandated use of ninth and tenth-grade short cycle diagnostic assessments. In her State of the State Address earlier this year, Martinez noted that over the past five years, New Mexico has reduced time spent on state-mandated testing, and added that her administration has made further changes to reduce testing time once again this year.

Additionally, Martinez signed Senate Bill 19, sponsored by Sen. William Payne, R-Albuquerque, which makes it easier for out-of-state workers to come to New Mexico to repair telecommunications, energy, and other critical infrastructure in the event of a disaster declared by the governor or the president. The legislation reduces burdensome taxes, paperwork, and fees for these workers as they come to New Mexico for only a short time to help respond to emergencies.

“When these professionals come to help New Mexicans in the event of a disaster or emergency, they should not be faced with excessive red tape,” Martinez said. “This legislation makes it easier for them to come to our state and repair much-needed infrastructure like telephone and gas lines in the event of a storm or another emergency.”

Gov. Martinez also acted on the following legislation:
  • Signed Senate Bill 81 — K-5 Plus Pilot Project [MESSAGE]
  • Signed House Bill 177 — Solo-Worker and Out-of-State Revenue Program [MESSAGE]
  • Signed House Bill 252 — Remove Federal Conflict in Motor Carrier Law [MESSAGE]
