The Los Alamos Mountaineers meeting, Tuesday July 25, will be held in-person with a hybrid adjunct. Tanja Pietraß will speak about “Traversing the Wind River Range.”.

With her friend David, Pietraß crossed the Wind Rivers on foot in August of 2022, starting at the Green Lakes and exiting at Big Sandy, covering about 86 miles. Smoke Spotted Near Pajarito Ski Hill … LAFD, Santa Fe Forestry On Site

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos Fire Department and Santa Fe Forestry crews are responding to a small fire start-up near the Pajarito Ski Hill.

These small fires are a result of a lightning strike on one tree from this afternoon’s rain storm.

As seen from the Los Alamos townsite, this smoke activity is on Santa Fe Forest land. LAFD fire crews are on scene and Santa Fe Forestry Engine crews are in the area.

Loa Alamos Police dispatch is aware and communicating with LAFD.

LAFD officials advise that the situation is under control and thank citizens for their diligence in reporting the smoke. Read More

Senators Ben Ray Luján And Cynthia Lummis Introduce Legislation To Improve Federal Wildfire Recovery Efforts

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) introduced the Responsible Wildland Fire Recovery Act today, which would allow the Secretary of Agriculture to waive all cost share requirements for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs as a result of wildfires started by controlled burns and other land management activities conducted by the USDA on National Forest System land.

Current law does not fully cover remediation costs in cases where the government is responsible for a wildfire’s ignition.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. – At Ashley Pond in Los Alamos, two watermelon-loving geese are the teachers.

“They were love at first sight, I believe,” Robert Cantu said. 

This present-day pair is still getting to know each other.

“Ed is quite stubborn,” Theresa Phelan said. 

Theresa Phelan has closely watched this pond for the past decade. She says “Ed” used to be known as “Edna.”

“When we picked up, Edna we got her assessed by a vet and found out she was Ed,” Phelan said.

Los Alamos County Environmental Services To Close On Aug. 2 For Employee Professional Development Day

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Environmental Services will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 2, for Employee Professional Development Day.

This includes operations at the Eco Station and the Overlook Convenience Center, as well as residential and commercial trash, recycling and yard trimming services.

There will be no changes to residential yard trimming and trash pickup during the week.

All commercial services that fall on Wednesday will be collected on Tuesday or Thursday.

Name Suggestions For New Geese Pour Into Daily Post!

The Los Alamos Daily Post has received more than 200 name suggestions for the two new geese, (shown here with Ed and Gwen) relocated last Thursday to Ashley Pond. Someone had abandoned the pair as goslings at the pond in May. They were too young to be on their own. LAPD’s Animal Control moved them to a safe location and recently had them examined by Veterinarian Kathleen Ramsay before returning them Thursday to the pond.
