SFNF: Coyote Ranger District Reports Rash Of Fires

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are concerned about a rash of fires that posed a potential threat to homes in the wildland urban interface (WUI).

The cause of the fires is under investigation.

Since Oct. 31, firefighters have responded to three fires on the Coyote District:

  • The 96 Fire near NM State Road 96, which occurred in a pile of woody debris from previous fuels reduction work;
  • The 76 Fire off of Forest Road 76, which directly threatened homes on the east side of Gallina; and

County Releases Winter Sidewalk Clearing Guidelines

COUNTY News:

During the winter months, Los Alamos County would like to remind residents that it is important to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice so that they remain pass­able for postal workers, children walking to school and others who need to use them.

When possible, and depend­ing upon available resources, County crews will conduct sidewalk-clearing operations by removing snow first from the adopted “safe routes to school” and then move to other selected sidewalks.

The County does not clear every sidewalk due to limited resources.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The oldest and thickest Arctic sea ice is disappearing twice as fast as ice in the rest of the Arctic Ocean, according to new research.
 
A new study in AGU’s journal Geophysical Research Letters finds ice in the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland is more mobile than previously thought, as ocean currents and atmospheric winds are likely transporting the old, thick ice found there to other parts of the Arctic.

Carson National Forest, El Rito District, recently announced commercial permits for cutting Christmas trees will not be issued this year due to the potential threat to the Mexican spotted owl, which is listed under the Endangered Species Act.

SANTA FE ― All Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of Thanksgiving Day.
 
Forest offices will resume regular business hours Friday, Nov. 29.
 
And this is just a reminder that cut-your-own Christmas tree permits go on sale Monday, Nov. 25. As part of the national Every Kid Outdoors initiative, fourth-graders with an Every Kid Outdoors pass are entitled to a free Christmas tree permit.

SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Española Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to implement prescribed pile burns to remove woody debris from the Pacheco Canyon and Hyde Park fuels reduction projects as early as Dec. 5 if conditions, including snow pack, fuel moisture levels, air quality, wind direction and weather forecasts, remain favorable.
