Cruise the Caldera Aug. 25

VCNP News:

Cruise the Caldera

Explore more than 60 miles of roads on the Valles Caldera National Preserve by Mountain Bike Saturday, Aug. 25.

This event will happen only once this season, and it is open for all ages and abilities.

Participants can ride from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at one of two entrances; Banco Bonito Staging area, mile marker 30 off N.M. 4 or the Valle Grande Staging Area mile marker 39.2 off N.M. 4.

New this year, the Preserve has combined this event with the Twilight Mountain Bike Ride, which starts only at the Valle Grande entrance, to allow cyclists the choice of extending their ride to 10 p.m. on the Preserve.

The Twilight ride is a great opportunity to experience a beautiful sunset on the Preserve and a chance to see a lot of wildlife.

Registration is online, or walk-in registration is accepted on the day of the event at Banco Bonito visitors center for the day riding only or the Valle Grande visitors center for day and night riding.

Prices for either the Cruise or the Twilight rides:

$15 for adults

$12 for youth 15 and younger

Free for seniors 62 and older/kids 5 and younger

When riders check in at their starting location, they will sign a waiver, receive a map, a parking pass and have the opportunity to ask staff for recommended routes based on their ability.

VCNP strongly recommends participants ride with a buddy for safety. All riders must check out when they leave.

Arrive prepared for mountain conditions. Wear layers of clothing and bring water and food. All riders are required to wear a helmet.

Other items to consider bringing include camera, binoculars, headlamp for the twilight ride, sunscreen, hat, rain gear as for afternoon showers are likely, a small bike repair kit and extra water bottles.

The visitor center will sell snacks and cold drinks.
