Many home owners have or want to have Aspen in their yards, but they don’t realize the challenges they may experience when Aspens are put in the urban setting. Presenter Laural Hardin is a certified arborist and integrated pest management specialist.The cost is $8 or $6 for PEEC members. No advance registration is required.

Los Alamos Community of Atheists Monthly Discussion Meeting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 Mesa Public Library (upstairs). Discussion will be focused on the idea of organized “Sunday Assembly” which is sometimes referred to as atheist “church.” All are welcome. Authors Speak with Don Unser 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 at Mesa Public Library
Authors Speak Series present author and photographer Don Usner. Usner, who has written several books about northern New Mexico, is the official photographer for the Lannan Foundation’s literary series. Usner has taken photographs of dozens of authors including nobel prize winners. He will talk about his experience with these authors in conjunction with the Faces of Lannan exhibit in the Mesa Public Library Art Gallery.

Friday, Nov. 22

Comet ISON – Will it Live up to the Hype? 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22 at PEEC
This talk will discuss comets in general and give an update on what’s likely to happen in early December. The program will also address what PEEC will be doing to give people the opportunity to view the comet.

Saturday, Nov. 23

18th Annual Letter Carrier & Boy Scouts Food Drive 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23
This community food drive is jointly conducted by the Los Alamos Letter Carriers Union (NALC-4112), the Northern New Mexico District of the Boy Scouts of America, and LA CARES with the support of the National Letter Carriers Union, the US Postal Service, the Knights of Columbus, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores, RE/MAX and many individual volunteers. The drive supports those in need in Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties through regular distributions by LA CARES and the San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen in Espanola. Residents should place non-perishable donations of food and supplies near their mailboxes for pick-up by Letter Carriers, Scouts, and volunteers.  Cub Scouts will also be collecting donations at both Smith’s Supermarket locations in Los Alamos and White Rock from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23.
