Bear Springs Fire Grows to 100 Acres

 

Three lightning fires were reported Sunday in the Santa Fe National Forest.

The Bear Springs Fire in the Jemez Ranger District is exhibiting active fire behavior with running and spotting and had grown to more than 100 acres by this morning.

The two fires reported in Pecos were contained.

Bear Springs Fire Update:

Fire Name: Bear Springs

Time/Date Reported: 6:36 p.m. Sunday, June 3

Location: Jemez Ranger District, Santa Fe National Forest; approximately six miles northeast of Ponderosa and six miles southeast of Jemez Springs.

Legal Description: T17N, R4E, SWNE Sec 31

Cause: Lightning

Fuels: Mixed conifer, ponderosa pine

Size: 100 acres plus. The fire is actively burning. Sunday night when firefighters arrived on scene the fire was reported at 20 acres. At dawn today, the fire was 40 acres, the fire is now more than 100 acres.

Percent Contained: 0

Resources Committed: Multiple ground and air resources are en route and on scene. A Type 3 Incident Management Team has been ordered.

Today’s Weather: Dry thunderstorms are expected to develop over the area this morning with a 20 percent chance of precipitation. Today’s maximum temperature: 83 degrees; southeast winds: 5 to 9 mph; relative humidity: 16-21 percent. Summary: Active fire behavior has been observed with running and spotting.

Smoke: A smoke plume emitting grey smoke is visible from Jemez Springs, Jemez Pueblo, San Ysidro, Bernalillo, Cuba, Santa Fe, N.M. 4, N.M. 550 and I-25. Smoke is drifting north towards Coyote.
