BBBS: January Is National Mentoring Month

BBBS Los Alamos/Rio Arriba Counties Co-Chair
Founded in 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States.
Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children, ages 6-18, in communities across the country. Our mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.
National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. Big Brothers Big Sisters operates in all 50 states, and in 12 countries around the world!
I have been involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region here in Northern New Mexico for six years. I have co-chaired the Los Alamos/Rio Arriba Regional Board for the past four years.
I taught school for 22 years. During that time I coached and sponsored many sports and activities. I raised two of my own children and am also a step-mother to a third child. Now I am about to become Abuela for the third time this month. I am devoted to improving children’s lives. Therefore, I have chosen to spend my time, energy and money on Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region.
The more adults who truly care about an individual child, the more resilient that child is. BBBS does one thing only and they do it very well; that is, they match a thoroughly vetted adult mentor (Big) with a child/teen (Little). It’s as simple as that; two people, who care about each other, spending time together – a most precious gift!
Highly trained staff, dedicated volunteers, an established organization (over 100 years strong) and positive results are what Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region is all about.
Please consider being a part of something BIG; even in a LITTLE way. Contact LA/RA Regional Director Dawn Brown today at 505.614.4231 or email
