Alzheimer’s Assoc. Hosts Caregiver Seminar Online Jan. 29

AANM News:

ALBUQUERQUE — The Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter (AANM) is announcing a special one-day virtual “Caregiver Seminar” for families in New Mexico experiencing Alzheimer’s and dementia.

This free inclusive seminar is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29. The seminar covers content from all three Alzheimer’s Association “Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers” programs: “Early Stage”, “Middle Stage” and “Late Stage.”

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can lead to many questions. As the disease progresses, the need for information and support will grow. Combining the three-part program into one informative overview allows the caregiver a unique opportunity to preview and prepare for the challenges each stage of the journey presents. What does the diagnosis mean? What can I do as the situation changes? What resources are available to help? How do I plan for the future?

“We are excited about this seminar that provides family caregivers with information and tools to best support their loved one with dementia,” AANM Program Director Ron Eppes said. “We are especially pleased to present a Saturday format to allow all those working family caregivers the opportunity to attend.”

Family caregivers are encouraged to participate in this free seminar that will address questions that arise when caring for a loved one in any stage of the disease. Hear from other caregivers and learn about tips and strategies that can help at every stage.

“There is so much fear and confusion that comes with a diagnosis of this disease. This seminar will lessen those fears and provide families with a way to map the future together with love and thoughtfulness,” Eppes said. “With this guidance and support families will be able to reduce stress and experience joy as the disease progresses. This seminar is very practical and gives you what you need to know, what to plan for, and what to do along the way.”

Seminar Schedule:

  • Early Stage Presentation: 9-11 a.m.
  • Middle Stage Presentation: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Late Stage Presentation: 2-4 p.m.

Free. For registration and information, contact: nmprograms@alz.org or 505.266.4473

Today, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the USA, killing more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

Currently, there is no prevention or cure for Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s takes a devastating toll – not just on those with the disease, but on entire families.

In New Mexico, 43,000 people over age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease and there are 85,000 unpaid dementia caregivers, many of whom are family members, contributing 157 million hours of care valued at $2.5 billion.
