Los Alamos Co-op Market News:

Los Alamos Co-op Market is hosting an art exhibit in the café of works by local artist Stephanie Zielaskowski.

From an early age, Zielaskowski’s life was full of museum and gallery visits, creating and researching artists who resonated with her. She earned a BFA in Sculpture, with a minor in Art History, at The College of Saint Rose; and also attended The University of Kansas for some graduate courses. Zielaskowski is inspired by visual artists Cy Twombly, Eva Hesse and Terry Winters.

Works on the walls of the Co-op Café are either screen-printing or gouache.

“Some of my work looks like it’s from another planet,” said Zielaskowski, explaining that the underlying theme is that of emotion, “and growing up in a house where my parents didn’t know how to deal with…my enormous feelings.”

Now as an adult who has a better grasp on emotional intelligence, some of Zielaskowski’s feelings are still “delicately wrapped in packages of gouache, a secret between the paper and myself.”

A teacher recommended that she draw with her non-dominant hand, which is how Zielaskowski got started with her current body of work.

“Not only am I pulling from nature for inspiration, but I make little cocoons that protect my feelings and memories, everything can be wrapped up into these messy little abstract forms. It’s a compulsion,” she said.

Moments in time, memories, feelings big and small … are all wrapped and stored by Zielaskowski as fodder for her artwork. She creates artistic “packages” that hold secrets and imaginary worlds, things that are to come. Sometimes they are intricately decorated and sometimes more plain; she explains that the plainer packages are like memories that have faded over time.

Originally from Schenectady, N.Y., Zielaskowski met her physicist husband in 2015 and was swept away to New Mexico. She lives in Los Alamos with her husband, pre-school son, and a very old dog.

All works are for sale, and can be purchased at the Co-op. The show will come down at the beginning of September.

The Los Alamos Co-op offers delicious, healthy, breakfast and lunch items at the deli hot bar and salad bar. Deli choices include gluten-free and/or vegetarian-friendly options.
