Youth Activity Centers Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest In Final Stretch

YAC News:

Tuesday marked the official nation-wide start to Red Ribbon week and the Los Alamos and Youth Activity Centers poster contest is in the final stretch.

The third through eighth grade facilities have taken time throughout the campaign to encourage healthy choices, educate families and demonstrate how much fun there is to have on their journey.

“I remember each year there was a County-wide poster contest held here in the Community Building for Red Ribbon Week when I was a kid,” YAC Director Jordan Redmond said. “If that poster contest helped me remember, maybe another contest can help other kids remember!”

The theme for 2018 is, “Life is your journey, travel drug free.” Posters are due by 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. Posters may be dropped off at the White Rock or Los Alamos Center. Those that enter will have their posters judged at the end of Red Ribbon week and prizes awarded at the end of the national campaign.

“We never know when our kids when first be exposed to illegal drugs or how it will be offered, so it’s important we arm them early with the information that drugs aren’t good for them,” Redmond said. “We don’t have to scare the kids for them to have a lasting memory – we just have to engage with them.”

The Red Ribbon week activities started with a lesson on the science of addiction. The lesson was related to something as simple as cotton candy and a demonstration of resistance skills. It was followed by a national coloring day activity that resulted in creating a display in each center. The displays contain pledges to remain drug free, art work and educational information on how to stay drug free. Information is also available for parents on simple steps to help along the way. Those simple steps include locking up medications and disposing of outdated products. The next drug take back day is coming up Oct. 27.

“The contest to open to kids in grades 3 through 8 all over town, even if they aren’t Youth Activity Center members,” Redmond said. “YAC members in attendance will help a group of adults in the poster judging. According to Redmond, winners for each category will receive a gift card. Questions can be directed to 595.662.9412.  The Los Alamos location next to Ashely Pond Park and the White Rock Center is next to the White Rock Branch Library.
