Young Life Golf Tournament Helps Teens Go to Camp

By Carol A. Clark

Young Life Los Alamos is hosting its second annual golf tournament May19 at the Los Alamos Golf Course.

It’s a Four Man Scramble Format golf tournament in which participants can create their own 4-some or be placed on a team.

All monies raised will go to benefit kids going to camp this summer.

This charitable event includes dinner, a raffle and prizes for the cost of $85 per golfer.

“It costs about $500 to send a teenager to summer camp for a week,” said Young Life Area Director Ryan Gilbert. “With the economy the way it is, we are able to offset that cost for families in need.”

Gilbert explained that the golf tournament also is a way to inform people about the Young Life organization and what it does for youth.

“Young Life thinks the world of kids and we believe that they deserve to know what life can hold for them,” Gilbert said. “Young Life leaders share the hope that Christ offers as well as fun and lasting friendships with our youth.”

He went on to say that his organization believes in the power of presence.

“We see teenager’s lives dramatically impacted when caring adults come alongside them, sharing God’s love with them,” Gilbert said. “Because their leader believes in them, they begin to see that their lives have great worth, meaning and purpose.

“This is the first step of a lifelong journey – the choices they make today, based upon God’s love for them, will impact future decisions, careers, marriages and families raised – all ripple from the time when a Young Life leader reached out and entered their world.”

Everyone is welcome in Young Life, he said.

The May 19 tournament includes a 1 p.m. shot gun start. The deadline to register is May 16.

“We’re not looking for players any more but we still need additional sponsors,” Gilbert said. “A full sponsorship is $250, which gives the sponsor a sign on a hole. For $500, a sponsor will get a sign on a hole and a 10×10 tent set up with a table where they can meet players and pass out trinkets.”

Last year about 65 players participated in the Young Life Golf Tournament and Gilbert anticipates 85 to 100 players this year.
