YMCA News:

The Family YMCA’s Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Garden Crew is holding a community informational meeting 6-7 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at an educational garden site it is developing that is immediately next to the North Mesa tennis courts.

The meeting will brief the community about crew activities, current garden design, and demonstration greenhouse choices. The crew will collect input from community members on all plans and activities.

In case of inclement weather, the meeting will move to the North Mesa Stables, lot 67-68 on North Mesa Road, a short walking distance from the tennis court area and the educational garden site. For more information, email garden@laymca.org or call Myriem Le Ferrand at 505.662.3100.

In 2011 and 2012, State Farm Insurance awarded the Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board two grants to forward food-growing curriculum and educational outreach initiatives to Los Alamos students.

JJAB awarded contracts to The Family YMCA to forward these grant objectives, which the Y fulfilled. While State Farm considers the grants closed, funding for a greenhouse and more educational activities still remains. The Y is using these funds to continue educational gardening objectives.

Due to construction at Los Alamos Middle School in 2012-2013, the Y responded to a Los Alamos County Community Educational Garden Request for Proposal issued in the fall of 2013. The LAC RFP was awarded to the Y with the contract signed in June 2014.

The Y was awarded a New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps grant to employ youth in developing the garden March through September of 2015.
