The Family YMCA is hosting it’s first Día De Los Muertos 5k, 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Los Alamos Cooperative Market/Canyon Rim Trail, to Run to Remember.
El Día de Los Muertos or The Day of the Dead is a holiday in which people are able to honor their loved ones who have passed on before them. It is a way to connect with those loved ones and to celebrate their lives. It is celebrated in Mexico as well as other Hispanic cultures and allows a connection between the living and the dead.
The Y’s Día de Los Muertos 5K Run will be a spectacular way to honor loved ones who have passed on. It will include an Ofrenda with candles to light for the loved ones being honored. There will also be a board in which pictures of loved ones can be placed to celebrate them in a fun, unique and active way.
There will be prizes for top finishers as well as best costume, so dress to impress. There will also be fun activities for the kids at the end of the race. Proceeds will go to The Y to help support after-school activities, summer programs and sports programs for youth.
Local vendors and artisans will be there. Even if not participating in the 5K, everyone is invited to attend and celebrate the racers, Día de Los Muertos and have some fun!
Pre-Registration:
Now – Nov. 1, 7 p.m.
Adults 14 and up: $35/$25 Y Member
13 and under: $15
Day of Registration:
Nov. 1, 7-9 p.m. at Main YMCA or Nov. 2, 8:30-9:30 a.m. (only) at Los Alamos Co-op.
Adults 14 and up: $40/$30 Y Member
13 and under: $20
Pre-registration race packet pick up is 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the Main YMCA (1450 Iris St.).
