About Wendy Stein, Wildlife Photographer. . .Mostly Birds
Wendy Stein is a Santa Fe-based wildlife photographer and devoted bird enthusiast. Working with a super-zoom lens, she observes from a respectful distance, then renders the everyday lives of (mostly) birds preening, foraging, and parenting against subtly textured, painterly backgrounds.
While being an outdoors enthusiast, herbalist, and traveler, she was introduced to avian conservation in South Africa with the Bearded Vultures. Her photography practice took root during the pandemic, when time outdoors offered steadiness in transition.
Binoculars became a camera, then a long lens, then a longer one. A turning point arrived when she watched a Green heron rebuild her nest after a loss. The bird’s resilience became a quiet lesson that shaped Wendy’s work. As she shared daily photographs, friends navigating wildfires told her those glimpses of the ordinary felt like a lifeline; something steady, hopeful, and real.
Wendy continues to grow her practice by exploring bird and wildlife habitats, learning with nature communities, and inviting others into close looking. Holding a B.A. in Studio Art from Michigan State University, she has exhibited in the United States and abroad.
Wildlife is everywhere, and noticing their presence through their songs, calls, and small rituals enriches our world. Through her photographs, she hopes to spark curiosity, deepen care for living beings, and encourage the protection of natural places for future generations. See more at wendysteinphotos.com.
