Saturday is Wildfire Day at Ashley Pond Park and among those expected to attend are Sparky the Fire Dog, Elroy the Elk, Smokey Bear and the Easter Bunny.
The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and promises many fun activities for all ages including an Easter egg hunt with 20,000 eggs held in partnership with the Elks Lodge. Other attractions include bouncy houses provided by Freedom Church and a bicycle safety course.
Los Alamos Fire Department vehicles and the Los Alamos Police Department bomb truck as well as the Care Flight helicopter and other public safety vehicles will be on display.
Representatives of the U.S. Forest Service, Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico State Parks and Los Alamos National Laboratory also will be on hand.
At 7 a.m., Central Avenue will close from Oppenheimer to 20th Street.
Christus St. Vincent staff will fit and present children with free bicycle helmets at the event.
The Los Alamos Fire Department is sponsoring the event, which also includes informational booths with materials designed to help residents prepare a defensible space and have a plan in place in the event that the community is affected by another wildland fire.
