The White Rock Branch Library hosts a new program beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, called “Paws for Reading,” where kids can practice their reading out loud with a dog as the audience.
Super-cute dog Briggs and his handler De Ann Painter are registered with Therapy Dogs International (TDI), which explains on its website: “The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading.”
TDI provides guidelines and evaluators to make sure that the dogs have the proper temperament to be service dogs.
Three additional sessions of “Paws for Reading” are scheduled in late April and early May:
- 3:30-4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 25;
- 3:30-4:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 2; and
- 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6.
The program is open to all beginning and emergent readers, but targeted specifically students in kindergarten through 5th grade. If your reader would benefit by this program, but is not in that targeted age group, contact Library Specialist Monique Archbold at 505.662.8265.
