LAPS Superintendent Jennifer Guy
Dear LAPS Families,
I am excited to welcome you to the 2025–2026 school year! Whether your family is returning or joining us for the first time, thank you for being part of the Los Alamos Public Schools community.
The first day of school is Monday, August 11. Individual schools will be sending out details about schedule pick-ups, classroom assignments, and opportunities to meet your child’s teachers before the year begins.
Our schools are clean, safe, and ready to welcome students back to classrooms. A big thank you goes to our custodial and facilities teams who worked hard over the summer to make sure every space is ready to support learning.
We are especially excited to celebrate some incredible milestones this year. Mountain Elementary is marking its 75th anniversary! We are proud to honor this moment in the life of a great school. In addition, our two new school buildings at Piñon and Chamisa Elementary Schools will open their doors to students on August 11. These beautiful, modern facilities are ready to welcome learners, with final work continuing on playgrounds and parking lots over the next few months.
Academically, our students are making strong strides. We’ve seen notable gains in reading and math across the district—particularly at Barranca, Aspen, and Los Alamos Middle School—and we’re excited to build on that momentum. This year, all K–12 students will benefit from a new science curriculum that emphasizes hands-on learning and critical thinking. We will also begin review of the math curriculum and will have the opportunity to select new materials for adoption. I look forward to inviting families to be part of that process. Math is a critical area identified for improvement and adopting high quality instructional materials is an important process to ensure our students have what they need to succeed.
LAPS is looking for great people to join our team! If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a substitute teacher, school bus driver, or educational assistant, I encourage you to reach out to me or visit our website. These roles offer a meaningful way to support students and are perfect if you are looking for something that aligns with school schedules. LAPS is the best place to work!
At Los Alamos Public Schools, we believe every student deserves an excellent education. We are committed to helping all students thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally. I am confident that this is going to be our best school year yet! Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to a strong start on Monday, August 11!
Warmly,
Jennifer Guy
