Staff Report

The second annual Valles Caldera PyroClassic XC Mountain Bike Race got underway this morning.

Considered one of the most scenic and challenging mountain bike races in New Mexico, the race courses for Pro/Cat1, Intermediate/Cat 2, and Beginners/Cat3 cover the stunning landscape of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, winding through valley meadows and climbing over the flanks of the volcanic upheaval of 11,000 foot Redondo Peak.

The PyroClassic offers race categories for everyone.

All races start and finish near the historic Valles Caldera Ranch Headquarters with Cat 3 doing a 9 mile loop, Cat an 18 mile loop and the Pros/Expert tackles the 30 mile Redondo Peak/Alamos Canyon Loop.

Climbing on the expert/intermediate course is substantial, with a total ascent of more than 2,400 feet for experts, all at an elevation of 8,000 feet plus.
