COUNTY News:
Hasse Contracting Company Inc., under contract with Los Alamos County Public Works to construct the Urban Trail Phase I & II Multi-use Trail Project, will have construction activities at the following locations downtown and along and off Canyon Road during the week of March 18.
Weather permitting, areas impacted include (see included maps below):
- Work Zone Area 1: Within the Fuller Lodge grounds adjacent to Central Ave. and heading north towards the Romero Cabin – This section of the trail has been opened to pedestrians. This area still needs final grading and landscaping, which will occur within the next couple of months as the weather warms up.
- Work Zone Area 2A: 20th St. from the Youth Activity Center driveway, north to the main access to 475 20th St. – This section of the trail has been completed and opened to pedestrians. This area still needs final grading and landscaping, which will occur within the next couple of months as the weather warms up.
- Work Zone Area 2B: 20th St. from Trinity Drive to Ashley Pond Park parking lot driveway – Repair work to the curb ramp on the west side of 20th at Deacon Street was completed during the week of March 11. This ramp will remain closed through Tuesday, Mar. 19 and detours are directing pedestrians to the crossing to the north. Otherwise, this section of the trail has been completed and opened to pedestrians. This area still needs final grading and landscaping, which will occur within the next couple of months as the weather warms up.
- Work Zone Area 3: Within the wooded area by the Canyon Road Tennis Courts – The tennis courts parking lot will be closed for the duration of the construction and utilized as a staging area by the contractor. The tennis court and wallboard are closed. Alternatives for tennis and wallboard can be found at Urban Park, Myrtle Tennis/Pickleball Courts, Piñon Park, and Barranca Mesa Park. Activities will include construction of the piers for the precast boardwalk along the east and north sides of the work area and excavation and construction of the trail alignment from Spruce Street.
- Work Zone Area 4: Within the Fuller Lodge grounds starting at the Romero Cabin and continuing north to Nectar Street – Occasional brief flagger operations on 19th St. for construction vehicles accessing the work site. Sidewalk closures within the Fuller Lodge grounds are in effect and pedestrian detour signage has been placed to direct pedestrians around the work areas. Construction of the last remaining section of trail in this area adjacent to the Ancestral Puebloan site will continue during this week.
- Work Zone Area 5: Peach and Ponderosa streets – The section of Peach Street between Nectar and Ponderosa streets will be closed with traffic detoured to 19th St. On Ponderosa and Nectar, two lanes of traffic will be maintained with occasional flagger operations for construction vehicle access to the work area. On the south side of Nectar Street, the section of sidewalk west of 19th St. will be closed to construct the trail curb ramp. Detours will direct pedestrians to the north side of Nectar and Peach while this work is completed.
- Work Zone Area 6: Canyon Road, Tennis Courts to Aquatic Center – The Contractor anticipates starting saw cutting of the pavement along the north side of Canyon Road in preparation for beginning trail construction in April. This work will include a shoulder closer in the areas where saw cutting is occurring. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained with occasional flagger operations for construction vehicle access to access the work area. The sidewalk to the Los Alamos Nature Center will remain open during this work, as will vehicle access. Vehicles and bicyclists are asked to “share the road” where these shoulder closures are occurring.
Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use caution around construction activities and avoid entering the work zones. Construction hours are planned from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be necessary if construction activities during the week are impacted by weather.
