Historic Preservation Advisory Board News:

The John F. Kennedy (JFK) Memorial ticket booth at Sullivan Field has been demolished. Never fear, though, because there is a nice plan for preserving and restoring this important piece of the unique history of Los Alamos.

President John F. Kennedy visited Los Alamos Dec. 7, 1962. He visited the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to discuss Project Rover, the Laboratory’s nuclear rocket engine for space travel, spoke to the public at Sullivan Field, and was cheered on by the community as his motorcade traveled through town to the airport.

A YouTube video of his visit is online at https://youtu.be/YatKDywQpQM; listen to audio of his speech at https://www.jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/archives/JFKWHA/1962/JFKWHA-146-008/JFKWHA-146-008.

Many residents remember this historic event, which was memorialized on the ticket booth at Sullivan Field.

As part of construction of the new field house near the football field, this ticket booth was torn down. Los Alamos High School has done a great job planning for the preservation and restoration of the bronze components of the memorial.

Prior to destruction, the bronze pieces were removed and have been carefully stored for eventual installation on a new memorial wall at Sullivan Field. They will be cleaned and restored prior to installation.

The Historic Preservation Advisory Board is monitoring progress on the new JFK Memorial Wall and will provide assistance as necessary to ensure its preservation for the enjoyment of future generations.

Watch for announcements on the dedication of the memorial towards the end of summer.
