New Mexico Wild
The Gila River has long been sought after for recreationists and nature lovers alike due to its breathtaking vistas, rich history, and remarkable diversity of plants and wildlife. As one of the last remaining undammed, free-flowing rivers in the Southwest, few have had the opportunity to experience the Gila River firsthand and ultimately understand why it deserves lasting protection for generations to come.
To help understand the Gila’s beauty, all should seize the opportunity to view Journey Down the Gila, the first full-length documentary that visually captures the beauty and spirit of this special place. Directed by Albuquerque filmmaker David Garcia, the film follows an emotional journey of three New Mexico mothers who take a river trip through the Gila Wilderness, and the touching story about their three teens who gave their lives for the wild places they loved. While navigating grief and loss, the three mothers continue to carry their children’s legacies to protect this unique ecosystem forward tirelessly. It’s a love letter to the Gila River and a rallying cry to keep it flowing freely.
Communities in and around Los Alamos are invited to attend a special screening of this film, which is not available for purchase or streaming. Join New Mexico Wild March 18 at SALA Los Alamos Event Center. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the film beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a brief update on ongoing efforts to secure permanent protection for the Gila under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. If you can’t make this screening, there are three other showings: one in Las Vegas March 17 at the NM Highlands University SUB Theater and two in Santa Fe March 19 and 20 at the Center for Contemporary Arts. Tickets are available in advance at nmwild.org/events.
Become part of a growing community of advocates who believe some places are too precious to lose. By showing up and learning more, you are ensuring that the Gila River remains wild and free.
