The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) held a ribbon cutting ceremony early Tuesday evening to celebrate its newly remodeled Building 6.

Chancellor Mike Holtzclaw emphasized that making capital improvements to UNM-LA is a joint effort.

“We can’t do this without the support of the community,” he said, noting that the Los Alamos County Council, New Mexico Senators Leo Jaramillo and Bobby Gonzales as well as Rep. Christine Chandler all worked to help contribute funds to upgrading the UNM-LA campus.

Renovations to Building 6, which mainly houses general-purpose classrooms include:

  • Completely renovated restrooms;
  • Asbestos abatement;
  • New roof, flooring, paint, energy efficient lighting, interior doors, electrical system, HVAC units; and
  • Remodeled classrooms and faculty offices.

This is just the beginning; Holtzclaw said other capital improvement projects are being planned. These include renovations to the front steps to the campus, the parking lot and the sign at the front entrance. Additionally, the open spaces on the campus are planned to be renovated and Building 2 and Building 3  are scheduled to receive new roofs and new stucco.

Capital improvement projects are important, Holtzclaw said, explaining students can’t learn and faculty can’t teach without good facilities.
