ALBUQUERQUE – A culture change is happening on, off, and around the court at The Pit. University of New Mexico’s (UNM) first-year head basketball coach Paul Weir recognized the stagnant atmosphere surrounding his Lobo Basketball program’s relationship with the students of UNM.
Weir recognizes the importance of a great student section and created a new group called “The Howl,” the official student section of Lobo Men’s Basketball, to embrace this loud, proud, and passionate group of fans.
Students, including those at the UNM-Los Alamos campus, are encouraged to sign up and be a part of The Howl. In a series of tweets to the Los Alamos Daily Post, UNM Assistant Athletic Director of Communications Frank Mercogliano confirmed UNM-LA students enrolled in at least six credit hours are able to participate in The Howl, “So tell those LA students to get down here.”
Membership includes free tickets to all Lobo Men’s basketball games, free parking, and free pizza at a student only tailgate party before the games. That’s around a $500 value if students take advantage of participating.
“The more the LOUDER…,” Mercogliano said in a tweet welcoming UNM-LA students.
The Lobos began play this week taking on Omaha and Tennessee Tech, before heading to Destin, Fla. to face TCU in the opening game of the Emerald Classic Tournament. The Lobos started the season by dismantling Northern New Mexico College 147-76 in a record-breaking first outing for Weir.
