SANTA FE — UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) students Grace Johnson, Alegandra Pizano Mendez and Mateo Torres were awarded the New Mexico All-State Academic Team Scholarship Jan. 28 at the New Mexico State Capitol.
The recognition is presented to high-achieving college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor, along with leadership and service that extend their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. The award is sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the New Mexico Association of Community College Association. It honors transfer and workforce students that are PTK members and is granted by college nomination only.
UNM-LA’s PTK advisors were thrilled that three of the college’s students were selected for this honor.
“The All-USA Academic Team award affirms the hard work, resilience and potential of our students. Balancing their academic careers with jobs, families and community commitments, this recognition validates their efforts and opens doors for future opportunities. The PTK advisors are proud of their accomplishments and delighted to see them recognized,” Joe Matthews, PTK advisor said.
“We are beyond proud of Gracie, Alegandra and Mateo. Standing out amongst the best students in the state is a remarkable achievement. This recognition is a direct result of their hard work, dedication, leadership and academic excellence,” remarked Citlalitl Nava Gaxiola, PTK advisor.
Johnson plans to transfer to the UNM Albuquerque campus to finish her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. She doesn’t have any solid plans after her bachelor’s but would enjoy working as an engineer or pursuing more school.
Pizano Mendez plans to make a meaningful difference in the educational system by breaking down language barriers and creating inclusive, safe environments where all students can thrive.
Bilingual in English and Spanish, she is currently working toward proficiency in American Sign Language. She plans to earn her associate degree in early childhood development this year and continue her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education, with the goal of serving as a bridge between schools, students and families.
