UNM-LA News:
Do you feel your business or organization could benefit from a new approach to marketing, or perhaps you are curious about this fun and interesting field? UNM-LA will be offering an Introduction to Marketing (MGMT 222) course this semester, in which course participants will not only learn the basics of marketing, but also put what they’ve learned to use by writing a real marketing plan.
The three credit hour course meets 10-11:15 a.m., Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Jan.12 through May 9. Local businesswoman and UNM-LA instructor Laura Loy will teach the course.
In this course, students will be introduced to the marketing mix and the factors that make up the marketing environment. They will learn to apply market segmentation, targeting and positioning in order to develop an effective marketing strategy. Various methods of market research will be discussed, and students will have a chance to conduct their own market research for their marketing plans. Differences between marketing products and services will be discussed. The class also will explore different types of marketing, communications and promotions, and address how a combination of marketing activities should be determined.
At the conclusion of the course, students will understand the basic concepts of marketing, be able to develop a marketing strategy for a product, service or business, and have written their own marketing plan. In the past, students of this course have written plans for their own businesses or have teamed up with local organizations to gain experience by writing a plan for them.
Loy has worked in marketing for 15 years. Throughout her career, Loy has worked for large, public companies, as well as for smaller companies, startups and non-profit organizations.
