UNM-LA News:
The 2022 fall semester at UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) is rapidly approaching with classes beginning Aug. 22. Many classes are filling up, but registration is open for the seats still available in several courses.
UNM-LA, a branch campus of The University of New Mexico, has an open admissions policy which means there is not a minimum GPA or test score required for admission. With an enrollment of over 1,900 students, student profiles range from high school students through dual credit, young adults to working adults, veterans, and life-long learners.
Drawing from the talent in the region, UNM-LA has outstanding, caring faculty, many with Ph.D.s and current work experience in their field. Additionally, the small class size allows for the personal attention that is often critical for student learning and success. The student support in advising and career exploration is vibrant and personal. UNM-LA is committed to providing a quality educational experience for students. Students and their families can feel comfortable knowing they have made a good investment.
Financial aid and both state and local scholarships significantly reduce and/or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. UNM-LA is participating in the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, that together with the Lottery Scholarship and others, allows every New Mexican to pursue higher education without financial barriers.
Popular transfer programs at UNM-LA include Pre-Professional Health, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Business, Computer Science, and Liberal Arts.
For students seeking a degree in Mechanical engineering, the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) program is now available on the UNM-LA campus. UNM-LA, in collaboration with the UNM-School of Engineering and Los Alamos National Laboratory, has expanded the existing two-year pre-engineering program.
More programs developed for the community include Emergency Medical Services, Fire Science, Robotics, Welding, Electro-Mechanical, IT with Cybersecurity, and Certified Nursing Attendant. These programs prepare students to work in fields that have a very high employment potential.
UNM-LA students who are 65 or older can take advantage of a reduced tuition rate of $5 per credit hour for up to 6 credit hours for classes that have open seats once the semester begins. To qualify for this rate, seniors must be New Mexico residents. Registration for this reduced tuition opens on the first day of the semester.
“The process to enroll at UNM-LA is easy,” Director of Student Affairs, Kathryn Vigil said. “Any perspective students can visit the Student Services Office in Building 1 and fill out two short forms to initialize the enrollment process. The admission and registration process can also be facilitated online.”
Registration is open for fall classes. For information about registering for classes, call 505.662.5919 or visit Student Services in Building 1 on the UNM-LA campus. To view the complete fall schedule, go to this link.
