U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement to mark the celebration today of the Fourth of July:

“The United States of America is the first nation in the world founded on the idea that our government derives all of its powers from ’We the People.’

“Forged by a revolution against a monarchy and its absolute power, we are a beacon of liberty, equal justice, and democracy.

“Generations of Americans have stepped up to defend out most fundamental freedoms.

“They have helped us move closer to the full promise that each of us are created equal and endowed with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

“In celebrating our nation’s independence this Fourth of July, let’s also stay committed to the democratic ideals that make us all proud to be American.”
