Two Los Alamos School Board Candidates For District 4 Vacancy To Be Introduced At Forum Monday Aug. 24

LAPS News:

The Los Alamos School Board, with input from staff and the community has received applications from two candidates for a vacancy on the School Board created when Julia Baker stepped down because her family is moving to Spokane, Wash.

The School Board solicited letters of interest in the District 4 position, which must be filled by someone living in the District. They received letters of interest from parent and UNM-Los Alamos instructor Melanie Colgan, who was a candidate for the seat in the last school board election, and parent and former teacher Bethany Scott.

The Los Alamos Public Schools and the League of Women Voters will host a Forum with the two candidates at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24. Register to attend the Forum via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIlc-CrpzkiH9wGMmxqxfDhLslD3p5IoJar

“The purpose of the forum is for the community and the Board to get to know the applicants and to make the process as transparent as possible,” School Board President Ellen Ben-Naim said.

“Following the Forum, the School Board will continue to deliberate and will come to a decision at the School Board Work Session on Thursday,” Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus said.

The person chosen will serve until the next election cycle, which is Nov. 2021, Steinhaus said.
