Los Alamos County’s Streets Division will begin working on a new alignment for DP Road and the N.M. 502/Trinity Drive intersection Monday, Feb. 24.
Crews will construct a new intersection alignment required as part of the larger State of New Mexico Department of Transportation’s (DOT) N.M. 502/Trinity Drive roadway project, which extends from Knecht to Tewa Loop. The DOT’s project is in design and will begin 2015.
Initially, traffic impacts in the area will be minimal because most of the work is being completed in the unpaved right of way. Motorists are being asked to slow down and use caution in the area. Access to DP Road businesses will be maintained. To minimize disruptions, paving of the new intersection may be scheduled for a weekend, depending upon the availability of asphalt from local suppliers.
After paving the new intersection, traffic flow will be shifted to this new intersection and the existing raised directional islands in the area will be demolished and paved. During the demolition of the existing islands, east bound traffic will be shifted north to provide adequate work space for construction crews, limiting traffic to one lane in each direction.
Work hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, because of the one lane of traffic in each direction, motorists should expect congestion in the N.M. 502/DP Road area during peak traffic times and allow additional travel time accordingly.
Construction duration is expected to be approximately three weeks, weather dependent. For more information or questions, call the Public Works Department at 505.662.8150.
