Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race Is Sunday

The 43rd Annual Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race will take place on the morning of Sunday, July 12.

This race begins on Trinity Drive in downtown Los Alamos with eight different start times, depending on the category of racer. A car will lead out each race group in a neutral parade that goes over the Diamond Drive bridge toward Los Alamos National Laboratory. Once through the Laboratory VAP, the race begins at Casa Grande Drive, when the lead vehicle leaves the group of racers.

The course loops from Jemez Road, to the T-intersection with N.M. 4 at the Back Gate, passes Bandelier National Monument, continues through White Rock, and then turns for a climb up East Jemez. The loop will challenge riders with 27 miles with about 2,000 feet of climbing on each loop. The number of loops is dependent on the race category; the Mens Professional & Category 1/2/3 bike racers will complete three loops to finish while the Citizens racers will make one loop.

Cyndi Wells, the 2015 race director for the Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race, says, “I am honored to be the race director for the Tour de Los Alamos this year. I think it is incredible that we have a race in our community with such a long history. In fact, the Tour de Los Alamos is the oldest bicycle race in the Southwest. The course is known as a demanding race and that results in some exciting races with high calibre riders. And, I also love that the race has welcomed beginners. For many years, I did the Citizens race. I thought it was time to give back and volunteered to be the race director.”

The Tour de Los Alamos attracts racers from out of state.

“I love that this race provides a means to share our spectacular area with others. But, we don’t make it easy on them – with the climbing and exposed windy sections, it is a race for the tactically savvy and well-balanced racers,” Wells said.

On-line registration closed at noon today. Registration also is available 7-8 p.m. Saturday, July 11 at Pet Pangaea LLC in Central Park square and 6:30-7:30 a.m.  race day, Sunday, July 12, from in the parking lot area off Deacon Street and behind CB FOX Department Store. The first 150 registrants will receive a shirt and water bottle.

The Awards & Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12 at Bathtub Row Brewing in Central Park Square.

“This race cannot happen each year without sponsors and the hard work of a great number of volunteers,” Wells said. “We are still in critical need of volunteers – please click on the volunteer link on the Tour de Los Alamos website to volunteer! Let’s show these racers some great hospitality in Los Alamos.”

Volunteers are all invited to the Award & Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony.

“I will be giving away a $400 Visa gift card to a volunteer to show my appreciation,” Wells said. “I also want to thank Los Alamos County, the Los Alamos Police Department, Los Alamos Fire Department, New Mexico Department of Transportation, and Los Alamos National Laboratory for their assistance and cooperation with this event. And, a huge thank you to all the motorists on the road during the race who may experience a few delays. I appreciate your patience and your help in making this a safe day for the racers.”

Spectators are welcome to park in the overflow parking at White Rock Visitor Center.

“Please remember that you cannot park along the roadsides on Laboratory property,” she said, adding that there is no photography or videotaping allowed on any section of the course on Laboratory property.”

Sponsors this year include Launch Endurance LLC, Pet Pangaea LLC, Fusion Multisport, CrossFit Los Alamos, Los Alamos National Bank, Merrick & Co, Ruby K’s, Sol Web Solutions, Blue Sky Pilates, Bathtub Row Brewing, Los Alamos MainStreet and Los Alamos Derby Dames.
