Game Recap by Head Coach Jessica Kubicek-Sutherland

The Los Alamos High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team continues their winning streak, now at 8 games, with a decisive 4-0 victory over Goddard in the State Quarterfinals.

The Toppers came out strong and took the lead early with a goal by Junior Dayja Fellers in the 14th minute assisted by Sophomore Margaret Steinkamp. The defense foiled any attempts by Goddard to equalize as the midfield and offense worked together to build up additional scoring opportunities. Despite controlling possession and peppering the goal with shots, the scoreboard remained at 1-0 for the Toppers when they stopped for halftime.

Los Alamos continued to dominate in the second half and this time it didn’t take long for them to find the back of The Rocket’s net. Fellers scored another goal 2 minutes into the second half assisted again by Steinkamp. Steinkamp scored the next two goals, one assisted from Senior Isabel Atencio and one directly from a free kick, adding to her growing stats of 24 goals and 9 assists for the season. The defenders demonstrated even more calm strength in the second half and Goddard finished the game without a single shot on goal. The final whistle and a score of 4-0 moved the Toppers on to the State Semifinals.

The girls will continue to take on the #2 seed Albuquerque Academy in the Semifinals this Wednesday, Nov. 6 on the Chargers home turf. The Toppers are ranked #3, their highest seed in the State tournament in 10 years.
