Perhaps fired up by the talented National Anthem sung by Freshman Mattie Ruminer, the Topper boys’ basketball team came out of the chute on fire Tuesday night. They led the Espanola Sundevils 20-12 after the first quarter. However, the Sundevils outscored the Toppers by 20 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to take a commanding 57-45 lead into the 4th quarter. The Toppers never gave up and closed to within 10 in the 4th quarter before falling 80 to 70.

The Sundevils play a very aggressive defense and compete for every loose ball and rebound. Their defensive fouls sent the Toppers to the free throw line 34 times making 26 of them.

In the end the Toppers were forced to foul as Espanola went into their patented four-corner stall offense. Three Toppers fouled out and Espanola shot 34 free throws making 24 of them.

The Toppers were led in scoring by their sophomore guards, Jack Stewart and Antonio Trujillo; Stewart had 24 points and Trujillo had 17. The Sundevils were led by Marcos Flores with 25 points and Uriah Arellano with 21 points.

Wednesday the girl’s teams meet at Griffith Gym. The Sundevil girls are ranked #3 and the Toppers are ranked #4. Should be a great game!
