NHCC News:
In collaboration with Opera Southwest, the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is proud to present an opera of revenge and resilience during the Spanish Inquisition. Adam del Monte’s Llantos 1492 makes its debut at NHHC Feb. 16. Performances begin at 2:30 p.m., both Sundays, Feb. 16, and 23; and 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21.
As the Reconquista draws to a close and the Inquisition’s dark cloud gathers on the Spanish horizon, a lawyer defends a village of gitanos against false accusations. Against a musical backdrop that blends the musical traditions of flamenco and opera, the story unfolds: a rigged trial, mystical experiences, a love story, exile and execution. This is an opera about resilience and the ultimate triumph of identity, both religious and ethnic, in a time of intolerance.
Tickets range from $29 to $109, with discounts for groups of 8 or more, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. Learn more and register here.
Llantos 1492 matters because it asks audiences to confront what happens when power turns on the vulnerable. As marginalized communities are ripped apart by an empire’s ambition, this opera insists that amid loss, survival is its own kind of triumph.
