Taos Volunteer Parent-Educator Receives Hands-On Aviation Experience In Civil Air Patrol Teacher Orientation Program

NMCAP News:

TAOS — Mindy Jones, a local volunteer parent-educator with Taos Charter School, got a bird’s-eye view of northern New Mexico last Sunday, Sept. 21, when she took part in an orientation flight over Taos and southern Colorado with the local Taos Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol.

The flight, part of Civil Air Patrol’s Teacher Orientation Program (TOP), was piloted by CAP Maj. Blair Bouchier, a mission pilot with the squadron. The program gives educators a first-hand experience in applied aviation that they can take back into their classrooms to inspire students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“Flying above northern New Mexico and southern Colorado gave me a perspective that very few people besides private pilots get to have. We flew over many unique geographical and historic sites I’ve visited on foot, and I was able to see the Rio Grande Gorge from beginning to end,” said Jones.

Jones has been active in bringing aerospace education to Taos Charter School. Last year, she worked with CAP cadets and officers to help students build and launch model rockets. This fall, she is expanding the program with a Drone Day on Oct. 22. Students will learn to fly small, unmanned aircraft systems, explore their applications, and discuss civilian and military career opportunities in aviation.

“Civil Air Patrol opens doors to opportunities most kids in rural areas like ours would not otherwise have. These resources bring kids together and help build a sense of community around learning,” Jones said. Bouchier emphasized the importance of these programs: “I have volunteered with Civil Air Patrol for many years because I believe in its mission and enjoy the camaraderie of serving alongside so many dedicated members here in New Mexico. It’s very rewarding to share a passion for aviation and help others discover its possibilities.”

Educators can join Civil Air Patrol as Aerospace Education Members (AEMs) for a one-time $30 fee, which provides access to free STEM kits, classroom support, and opportunities like this flight. Founded in 1941 and established as the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force seven years later, Civil Air Patrol is chartered by Congress as a nonprofit organization for the purposes of youth development, aerospace education, and to promote general aviation. In an auxiliary role as a Total Force partner of the Air Force, CAP operates the world’s largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for search and rescue, disaster relief, training, and education. Civil Air Patrol is dedicated to serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures.
