FORT SUMNER — Around 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020, the De Baca County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 1976 Shenandoah Dr., in Fort Sumner, for human remains located in a Ranch Supply tool chest on the property.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate this homicide. State Police agents worked closely with the Office of the Medical Examiners and learned the identity of the victim as AJ Harden of Fort Sumner.
Through an extensive investigation, State Police agents were able to identify a suspect in Harden’s murder. Agents learned Candy Jo Webb, 27, of Fort Sumner, the granddaughter of Harden, gave him Xanax and Ambien.
After Harden died, Webb concealed his body in a tool chest. Webb drove the tool chest to 1976 Shenandoah Dr. in Fort Sumner where she discarded the body.
Oct. 28, 2020, an arrest warrant was issued for Webb through the De Baca Magistrate Court for the following charges:
- First Degree Murder; and
- Tampering with Evidence.
New Mexico State Police agents learned Webb was traveling across country to avoid apprehension. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, the US Marshals located Webb in Jacksonville, Fla. Webb was taken into custody without incident and booked into the local detention center in Florida to await extradition to New Mexico.
