Kurt Steinhaus

I want to serve the school community of Los Alamos as your Superintendent to help assure success for every learner and to support all of the great work being performed by students and staff in the school district. Providing visionary leadership, managing for high student achievement, and supporting continuous improvement are my three key commitments in serving as Superintendent.  

My leadership vision includes the use of insight and boldness to address challenges and celebrate successes. These ideas about visionary leadership have emerged from working in schools, applying educational research, and a broad-range of professional experiences. I see the schools in Los Alamos as places that are safe for children and free of bullying; schools where I want to lead as a principal, teach, or become a member of the support staff; and schools where students enjoy learning and that I want my own children to attend.

My management plan for high student achievement includes a customer-focused administrative team, quality teaching, and fully engaged learners. I will bring school staff together around a shared sense of purpose – seeing the big picture while focusing on the unique needs of every student. Student achievement for the whole child includes a balance of knowledge and fluency, physical skills, and emotional intelligence. With high expectations, I will support principals as the instructional leaders of each school, provide assistance when needed, and reward accomplishments.  

Supporting continuous improvement begins by my working closely with the Board of Education on strategic planning that will clarify the District’s mission and goals and defines performance excellence.  Managing the budget and securing additional funding will be a focus area in my work with the Board and I will lead the District by taking a systematic approach to determine the best allocation of time, talent, and funding. Analyzing data and developing operational effectiveness will be part of my regular work activities. 

Our schools are the bedrock of our community, and becoming Superintendent will allow me to have a direct positive impact on students reaching their potential. As an advocate for education, I have worked collaboratively with people of many different backgrounds and perspectives. I have brought diverse people around the table to find common ground and take action together on solutions. I am committed to listening first, to leading thoughtfully and respectfully, and to building strong partnerships to continue the traditions of excellence that are Los Alamos Public Schools.
