The speaker for the community forum this Sunday at the Unitarian Church has changed from the previously announced speaker and will now feature James Caroll. He will give a very interesting talk, which he presented to the Los Alamos Faith and Science group last summer: “Ethics, Love, and the Alignment Problem in AI”. This talk will still be at noon on Sunday.

About the talk:

Aligning the goals of AI with those of its human creators (the so-called “Alignment Problem”) is an incredibly difficult challenge. Carroll will discuss why it is so difficult and why so many famous and reputable researchers in AI believe that solving it is an existential challenge. Many of them believe that humanity itself will go extinct if we fail.

Carroll will explain why he believes that current approaches have been dramatically misguided, and give his own beginnings of a solution to the problem.
