YMCA News:

Summer has officially begun at The Family YMCA, and this week marked the exciting start of camps, trainings, and outdoor adventures for youth across Northern New Mexico.

Camp staff and counselors kicked off the season with intensive training focused on safety, leadership, and creating unforgettable summer experiences for local children. As part of that preparation, Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) leaders completed CPR and AED certification training with longtime YMCA instructor Leeanne Sanchez, ensuring they are prepared for a safe and successful season on local trails and outdoor projects.

Meanwhile, campers have already begun making memories. The Y Earth Service Corps (YESC) launched its summer with a visit to The Gifted Horse, giving participants an opportunity to connect with animals, nature, and each other while beginning a summer focused on environmental stewardship, exploration, and hands-on learning.

For teens who love the outdoors and want to make a difference in their community, YESC offers unique opportunities to explore Northern New Mexico, participate in conservation projects, develop leadership skills, and build lasting friendships. A limited number of YESC spots are still available for this summer.

Summer Sports Camps are also in full swing, with Flag Football, Tennis, and Golf getting underway this week. The YMCA is especially excited to introduce a new collaboration with Los Alamos County at the Golf Course, expanding opportunities for youth to learn and enjoy the game of golf.

This summer, the YMCA has expanded sports programming to serve both elementary and middle school-aged youth, creating opportunities for participants to try a new sport, sharpen existing skills, stay active, and build confidence throughout the summer months. In addition to traditional sports camps, the YMCA also offers popular Climbing Camps for youth seeking adventure and challenge.

Although applications for the 2026 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) are now closed, community members are encouraged to watch for YCC crews working throughout the summer on local trails and conservation projects. Youth interested in participating next year can learn more by contacting lzollinger@laymca.org.

“We’re thrilled to see summer come to life,” YMCA staff said. “From outdoor adventures and environmental stewardship to sports, climbing, and leadership development, our programs help young people build confidence, make new friends, and create memories that last a lifetime.”

Registration remains open for select YESC, Sports Camp, and Climbing Camp sessions.
