Stephens: Statement Of Candidacy For School Board

By JASMINE STEPHENS
White Rock

Hello, Los Alamos!

My name is Jasmine Stephens and I am running for LAPS School Board – DIstrict 2.

I grew up in White Rock. I attended Pinon Elementary, Los Alamos Middle School, and graduated from Los Alamos High School in 2012. I moved away from Los Alamos right after high school to pursue a career in entertainment but moved back when I met my husband in Santa Fe in We have 2 kids who are Chamisa Cheetahs. Though Chamisa was never “my school”, I have grown to love Chamisa and all the staff, students, and parents that make the school great.

I first wanted to run for school board when I was a sophomore in high school. This idea came to me after I not only saw but experienced inequality in high school. It became very clear to me that not everyone was an equal. There were times where students were being treated differently because of their family background, their economic background or because they didn’t live in a big house. This injustice drove my deep desire to want to make change.

My hopes for being on the school board are to bring awareness to the issues that really matter to the families in our community. My intention is to bridge the gaps between community resources, families, faculty and the school administration to fill in the cracks that LAPS has. We need to focus on the child as a whole and not just on their test scores. We need to have more empathy especially for the children who may be struggling. Not every child learns the same, not every child comes from the same background, and not every child is the same.

Each child in our district is a unique individual that deserves a place where they can thrive in a safe environment.

Please consider voting for me in this election. And if you see me around town, feel free to ask me questions or if you just want to chat, I would love to hear what you have to say!
