As we say goodbye to former Gov. Bill Richardson, there will be a lot written. Since his death last week almost everyone I see has a Richardson story to tell.

And there have been some wonderful obituaries written about his service in Congress and New Mexico. Some underscore the great work he did as U.N. ambassador, U.S. Energy Secretary, and most recently as a negotiator for Americans detained abroad.

Military & Veterans Day At New Mexico State Fair Sept. 12

DVS News:

ALBUQUERQUE — Military veterans and national guard/reserve/active-duty service members will be admitted free to the New Mexico State Fair on 2023 Military and Veterans Day at the State Fair Tuesday, Sept. 12.

This annual day at the state fairgrounds in Albuquerque is presented by the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS), the New Mexico National Guard, and the New Mexico State Fair to honor and thank the men and women who have served our country as members of the United States Military.

Library Of Congress Honors ‘News Literacy Project’ With Highest Award – The David M. Rubenstein Prize

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The News Literacy Project has received the highest honor from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program, the David M. Rubenstein Prize, in recognition of NLP’s outstanding efforts to teach people of all ages how to identify misinformation and help stop its spread.

Environment Department And City Of Albuquerque To Hold Public Meetings On Advanced Clean Cars, Trucks Rules

NMED News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the City of Albuquerque announced Tuesday the dates of public meetings on the proposed Advanced Clean Cars and Advanced Clean Trucks rules.

NMED staff will facilitate these meetings and answer questions from attendees. The New Mexico Department of Transportation will also participate in the meetings in order to provide a comprehensive perspective on how the proposed rules impact transportation.

SFNF Seek Appropriate Weather To Conduct Golondrino, North Aztec Springs, Joaquin North Prescribed Fires

SANTA FE — Fire managers and district rangers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are looking for appropriate weather conditions to implement three prescribed fires during the fall season.

The three prescribed fires include:

          • The 2,227-acre Golondrino prescribed fire in the Cuba district west of the communities of Llaves and north of Gallina;
          • The 650-acre North Aztec Springs, in the Española district, east of Santa Fe; and
          • The 1,750-acre Joaquin North prescribed fire will be in the Jemez district North of the Community of Gilman, west of Jemez Springs and south of Rancho de Chaparral

FBI: Shiprock Man Gets 3 Years For Involuntary Manslaughter

FBI News:

ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, have announced that Keanu Marcel Upshaw was sentenced to 37 months in prison.

Upshaw, 22, of Shiprock and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter April 6, 2023.

New Mexico Governor Announces Statewide Enforcement Plan For Gun Violence, Fentanyl Reduction

STATE News:

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Friday a new public health order that outlines immediate actions aimed at quickly reducing gun violence and illegal drug use in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.

The recent shooting deaths of a 13-year-old girl July 28, a 5-year-old girl Aug. 14 and an 11-year-old boy Sept. 6, as well as two mass shootings this year spurred the governor to declare gun violence a public health emergency on Thursday. The public health order includes directives to curb the gun violence and drug abuse that the Governor has declared to be public health emergencies. Read More

SANTA FE — Time for the harvest! Every year in late September, Los Luceros Historic Site (LLHS) invites the public to Fall Harvest Festival, a day of apple picking, local food and performances, community building, festivities, and education. The festival will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 24. 

Visitors might think of these activities as nostalgic, but for LLHS and communities throughout the surrounding region, the harvest remains one of the most important times of year.
