RIO RANCHO – State Rep. Christine Trujillo withdrew her endorsement of fellow state representative Joseph Sanchez and endorses Sandoval County Treasurer Laura M. Montoya.
“This decision came after discussions with Joseph regarding his position on women’s equal access to healthcare,” Rep. Trujillo said. “No matter what you believe or choose for your own family, elected officials must respect the fact that government should not be interfering with women’s healthcare decisions. We are in 2019 and yet, still fighting for equal rights and equal pay.”
“I first worked with Laura over a decade ago when I was the State President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). In more recent years, as a House Education Committee member, I worked closely with Laura on legislation that allowed teacher and counselor salaries to be more equitable. One piece of legislation that stands out is her work on the impacts of the ad valorem monthly distribution to schools.
“Laura has more legislative experience that all the other candidates combined by working both in the House of Representatives and the Senate as well as being the Legislative Chair for the Treasurer’s Affiliate for the past seven years. Laura is the congressional candidate that I trust to represent CD 3 because of her Northern New Mexico values and diligent work on policy. I know that she will work toward all New Mexicans having equal access to health care and pay. I wholeheartedly endorse my friend Laura Montoya for Congress.”
Montoya is running a people-powered campaign and has more than 17 years of experience at the federal, state and local levels. For the past seven years, she has served the fastest growing county in New Mexico as the Sandoval County Treasurer, which encompasses Rio Rancho as well as rural towns, villages, pueblos, two Navajo chapters and the Apache’s.
Montoya was born, raised and educated in Las Vegas, N.M. She is the daughter of Michael Montoya, rancher, retired DOT employee and former councilman and Geralyn Montoya, an educator and NEA member.
Rep. Christine Trujillo has served in the New Mexico State legislature for seven years, is a retired educator and former state president of the American Federation of Teachers. Trujillo grew up in Taos.
